ParticipantI see many opportunities to use Pass the Object. So many times in the classroom materials, snacks, papers, etc. need to be distributed. Why not use them as a way to reinforce those social and emotional learning skills? Get that eye contact. That hand to hand passing. That use of polite words. Building blocks for healthy social behavior.

ParticipantWe did an interesting variation of the Dance Ritual with a 12:1:1 class. All the students were seated at desks and I was was seated in a chair in the front of the room. They followed my lead (seated) and when it was time to “do your dance” I would call a student to take my place and we all would follow. Then that student would return to their seat and a new student was chosen. This was a lot of fun and worked really well, as it gave them all the chance to do the activity but also the support of their desks. This class had some volatile personalities, that would often trigger each other, so this format helped to keep that in check.

ParticipantHad an interesting session where a student was painting with water. Innocent was engaged and painting, and then took it upon himself to crumple up the paper. Was this a time to correct him? We were somewhat conflicted, but given that he was engaged for most of the activity (and engagement is a challenge for Innocent), we measured it as successful.

ParticipantI think that an important “Know what’s important” for this is a clear “Go” and a clear “Stop” as executed by the student, based on the ability of the student. Sometimes it’s not so perfect, but if it is student initiated, it is moving towards the goal of “what’s important”. No over prompting please!
