I really like the suggestion of having the students cheer, chant, or simply say the active students name.  Depending on the activity making sure they have something in their hands is also helpful.  I did the EASE activity Bean Bags with my class and I have allowed them to keep the bean bags they made close at hand if they need to wait for their turn or even during school assemblies or class assignments that may be more challenging for my kiddos that need to learn to wait.  Incorporating your own positive behavior support strategies also helps keep kids at bay.  Telling them they are waiting nicely.  Giving high fives or stickers, or using token systems usually help them to lengthen their wait time and patience.

I find it easier for my students to imitate actual movements.  Using arrow directions may be too abstract.  I know my class does a lot of music based “follow the leader” or “Simon Says” activities.  There is an app Go Noodle that has tons of exercise movement videos.  My students definitely follow along better when they see a human model.  Even the videos with cartoon characters are not followed as well.

I have found using Motown or 50s Be Bop music is fun for the kids to listen to.  Sometimes they recognize the songs. I use them because they have very friendly lyrics and the have easy beats to follow.  If you are going to use more modern music, I look into KidzBop.  I always want to keep the lyrics student friendly.

I have used scarves with my class for PE. We are usually sitting in a line practicing throwing them up and catching them. I may put my students into pairs and have them toss to each other.  Also, using music, the follow my movements going through high medium and low levels.  They will also practice movement imitation with helps me see if they are maintaining attention.
