Step-by-Step Instructions
Adult-Prompted Alternating (Sharing One Instrument)
One player chooses an instrument and sits in a chair. The second player sits facing the first.
Other students and adults in the class watch as an audience.
The teacher sits or stands between the two players.

The teacher prompts Player 1 to play the instrument, while Player 2, and the audience, watch and listen. Of course, however the student chooses to play the instrument is okay.
It is important for the teacher to keep turns VERY short – about the length of a short, spoken sentence.
Otherwise, the exercise becomes a series of monologues rather than a conversation.
The teacher prompts Player 2 to play the instrument, while Player 1, and the audience, watch and listen.
Again, a reminder to keep instrument playing turns very short.
Repeat steps 1-4 a few times, to make a “conversation.”
Then, the process can be repeated with new pairs of students.
Student-Initiated Alternating
This is very similar to Adult-Prompted Alternating, except that the players initiate passing the instrument to their partner without adult prompting.
